Meet the Staff with Suzy Jackson

Our team is continuing to grow! Say hello to our new Marketing Manager, Suzy Jackson. We’re finding out what her job entails and what she gets up to away from the office.
What is your current position at Transmit Start-Ups? Tell us a little about your role and what it entails.
I’m marketing manager, which is one of those ‘does what it says on the tin’ types of jobs, in that I manage the marketing!
There are several different ways that people come to realise that they need a start up loan, so it’s my job to make sure that no matter how they make the decision, that they’re aware of what Transmit do, and that they both like and trust us enough to choose to pursue their start up journey with us.
What does a typical day at Transmit Start-Ups look like for you?
Three months in, I can definitely say that no two days have been the same! I guess the main routine to my job is to keep an eye on our numbers, to watch social media and the press to understand the conversations that people are having, and to look for opportunities for us to get involved in those.
What is your background prior to joining Transmit Start-Ups and what made you decide to join the company?
I’ve spent the last four years as a business journalist for BQ, a position which gave me a brilliant insight into how entrepreneurs think, how they work, what they do and don’t like. I’ve worked in and around business support for the last fifteen years though, and I’ve seen it done well and not so well too. Moving from there into journalism, and listening to the people who run businesses, really gave me an insight into what does and doesn’t work for them – and it was this that brought me to Transmit.
What do you like to do away from the office to relax, do you have any hobbies or other interests?
Aside from keeping my hair coloured in all its rainbow glory, I am – are you ready for this? – a massive fan of independent professional wrestling. Alongside that I run a charitable organisation called PWGrrrlGang, which aims to help encourage inclusivity in the wrestling scene around the world so that all fans feel safe, welcome and happy. So I spend a lot of my weekends travelling around the country spreading that message, and watching men throw men at men. What’s not to like?!
What is it about working with start-ups that you like?
Passionate, enthusiastic people really inspire me. I think starting your own business takes bravery and tonnes of hard work, so it’s really very rewarding to feel like I’m doing anything that helps them navigate that journey. Entrepreneurs have a mindset that’s really unlike any other, and such wildly different approaches to their businesses, and I feel like no day goes by without me learning something new. You really can’t beat that.
If you could give one tip to a Start Up Loan applicant what would it be?
You don’t have to be brilliant at everything to be a successful entrepreneur – nobody is – but make sure you fill those knowledge gaps, either by learning, or by using the skills of others. Focussing heavily on mitigating your weaknesses will make your business far more stable and increase your chances of success overall.
If you’re thinking about setting up your own business or need any advice or questions answered on the start-up process, give us a call or drop us an email, we’d love to hear from you!
